Chicago

Chicago at Edinburgh Playhouse Theatre

Why see Chicago?

Start The Car, I Know A Whoopee Spot!

Join Roxie Hart and her merry murderesses as they battle for fame and freedom in this satirical look at the world of celebrity and justice. Set in the roaring twenties Chicago has everything you want from a musical, sex, murder and good old Razzle Dazzle that has you intoxicated from start to finish.

With hit tunes like 'Cell Block Tango', 'Razzle Dazzle' and 'All That Jazz' as well as the sassy original choreography by the great Bob Fosse, Chicago breathed a sense of fresh air onto the stage when it first opened in Broadway in 1975. Now 40+ years on Chicago is heralded as a pioneer of both Broadway and the West End and is a firm favourite in countries across the world. The 1997 revival ran on London's West End for 15 years and won an Olivier Award before closing in 2012.

What Is Chicago About?

Set in the Prohibition Era in Chicago famed vaudeville performer Velma Kelly is incarcerated behind bars awaiting trial for murdering her cheating husband and her traitorous sister. Fortunately Billy Flynn a renowned lawyer with a perfect track record, and a master at manipulating public opinion in favour of his clients is on her defense team. Everything is looking rosy until Roxie Hart a fame-hungry wannabe turns up. After being accused of killing her lover Roxie sets about stealing both Velma's limelight and her lawyer.

Each battling for their 15 minutes of fame, the women go head to head in the race to become Chicago's most notorious criminal and escape the rope.

The best cast yet!

We've been to see Chicago many times on many different tours, but I think this cast stands out. Velma and Roxy are perfectly cast (Roxy in particular has a blend of voice, dance and comic skills that absolutely nail the role) the dancers are sublime and the whole show is a blast from start to finish. My only gripe is the toilet facilities.. Oxford Theatre need to double the number of loos for the ladies!!! But having said that, it's easy to get to, easy to park, and we love this theatre! ...
