Heathers

Heathers at Edinburgh Playhouse Theatre

Why see Heathers?

So Very!

Listen up Corn Nuts, sell-out West End smash hit Heathers is heading out on a UK-wide tour once more! An uproarious and joyous adaptation of the 1988 cult classic, this is a high school musical with a difference. So grab your scrunchies and croquet mallets, this is one that would be deadly to miss...

Dear Diary, My Teen Angst Has A Body Count - The Story of Heathers

Heathers is the story of Veronica Sawyer and her inner turmoil as she traverses a high school ruled over by an intimating trio of scrunchie-loving dictators - the Heathers. Consisting of Heather Chandler, Heather McNamara, and Heather Duke, they stalk the halls of Westerburg High with an iron fist, verbally and mentally destroying anyone who gets in the way of their carefully guarded hierarchy.

But when the mysterious JD comes to class, Veronica may have found herself an ally in her hatred - albeit one with murder on his mind. Pitch-black and raucously funny, its a no-holds-barred look at the social strata of high school and the fate of anyone who might rally against it.

With a raft of songs including the infectious 'Candy Store', 'Dead Girl Walking', 'My Dead Gay Son' and many more, this bonkers adaptation will have you rolling in the aisles as Veronica steps up to defeat the Heathers once and for all.

Amazing, Hilarious, Dark!

Dear Diary, whether to kill yourself or not is one of the most important decisions a teenager can make, the next one is whether to go to Heathers The Musical on the West End - and if you want the short answer, I say yes!

A killer of a show that is clever and funny

What is the plot of Heathers The Musical about? Heathers The Musical is based on the 1989 hit film that featured Winona Ryder and Christian Slater. It centres around a group of three teenage girls who are all called Heather at Westenburg High School and dangerous teenager JD whose aim is to murder the popular students and to showcase their deaths as suicides. Veronica Sawyer joins the Heathers group at the school so that she can become popular however she is bullied and intimidated by them. She later falls in love with JD (Jason Dean) and they work together in making his murderous fantasies a reality. The message of this show is that you do not need to be popular in order to be happy. What themes are explored in Heathers The Musical? The themes that are explored in Heathers The Musical are bullying, assault, suicide, sexuality, murder, and acceptance. Cast Jenna Innes was incredible as Veronica Sawyer. She had bags of charisma and her mix of both comical and evil personas was performed effortlessly. Her vocals were powerful and flawless in equal measure. Jacob Fowler was terrifyingly good as JD (Jason Dean). He was charming but evil at the same time. He was so natural that you would believe that he is a criminal in front of your eyes. The chemistry between Veronica (Jenna Innes) and JD (Jacob Fowler) was infectious to watch and they were a great partnership on stage. Verity Thompson was strong as Heather Chandler. Her stage presence was great conveying the sassy girl. In addition she delivers moments of comedy magic too. Elise Zavou was brilliant as Heather Duke in addition to Billie Bowman as Heather McNamara who both performed their roles with panache and gusto. Kingsley Norton was sensational as Martha. She was likeable on stage. Her role was multi-layered showing both raw emotions combined with moments of light humour. Alex Woodward and Morgan Jackson were hilarious as Kurt Kelly and Ram Sweeney. They gave an energetic performance which helped to speed up the pace of the show. Their comedic timing was second to none where you could not help yourself laughing. This was a talented cast where their team spirit was a credit to watch regardless of how big or small their roles were. Sets The sets were simple, effective, and fun. The stage was turned into a high school which consisted of lockers, cheer leaders and a hippy teacher. The set was pretty much the same throughout the duration of this production and so some changes would have given it a more exciting and vibrant vibe to the show. Costumes The choice of costumes used in this production were simple, elegant and they added drama. J.D’s black outfit contrasted well against the bright ones worn by the Heathers which included Red, Green and Yellow. Soundtrack The soundtrack to this production was energetic combining some catchy numbers with emotional ballads. The songs were intertwined with the strong themes of the story. Highlights included Beautiful, Seventeen, Candy Store, Dead Girl Walking, Our Love is God and My Dead Gay Son. The music was brought to life by a live band with great orchestration. If you love an action packed musical with strong themes, humour, and catchy songs then Heathers is the show for you. ... Read more
