Varna International Ballet - Giselle at Edinburgh Playhouse Theatre

Why see Varna International Ballet - Giselle?

UK premiere

A tragic tale of love and betrayal set to a haunting score by Adolphe Adams, Giselle's bittersweet beauty will likely bring a tear to your eye when it is presented by the Varna International Ballet in spring 2023, who make their UK debut for the first time in their 75-year history. So sit back and enjoy an exquisite rendering from this first-class company.

What is the story?

A heart-rending tale of unrequited love, betrayal and forgiveness, Giselle uses exquisite style and kinetic grace to tell the story of the titular village maiden. Set in the Rhineland of the Middle Ages, it begins with the ensuing romance of the beautiful peasant girl Giselle and a humble villager named Loys. Unbeknownst to Giselle, her new paramour is actually a young nobleman in disguise, one who is already betrothed to another. A romantic triangle emerges that brings passion, death and eternal love.

I can't honestly say I knew what to expect. The music isn't as memorable as Tchaikowski's scores, but it is incredibly atmospheric, and coupled with the brilliant choreography, this was a performance to remember. ... Read more

Varna Ballet Giselle January 2023

I attended this production in Buxton. Buxton Opera House has a notoriously steep rake stage but this did not deter the dancers and the performance wonderful. I first saw Giselle in London in 1962 danced by Margot Fonteyne and a relative newcomer Nureyev - it too was wonderful. It brought back memories, but, for me, the youthfulness of the dancers, especially Giselle, was a treat to be remembered for very many years. I also attended the Varna Ballet's productions of Swan Lake and Coppelia, both in Buxton and both excellently produced and danced - thank you Varna International Ballet. ... Read more
